NOWRA City Church in North Nowra is
changing lives in Vietnam -- one pig at a
time. The church has been involved in
the Pigs Poverty Eradication Program for
the past five years.
Pastor Peter Pilt explains how just one
of the chubby pink animals can
transform the life of poverty-stricken
"We buy a pig for $100 and give it to
an impoverished family in a village.
They are trained in animal husbandry
and the basics of business and learn
how to run a micro business," he says.
Around six months later, the pig, a
sow, is artificially inseminated by a vet
and around four months later will have
a litter of piglets.
"They will generally have between 10
and 12. Part of the agreement is they
give two female pigs from the litter to a
new family. The organisation goes in
and trains that person and so it
perpetuates," Mr Pilt says.
The result is that a family that could
never afford a pig will have 10 within a
year. What they do with them is entirely
up to the family.
"They can raise them, eat them, sell
more -- it's a booming micro
enterprise," Mr Pilt explains.
The church congregation has bought
around 500 pigs to date and success
stories about the Danang-based
program are abundant.
"One lady couldn't send her children
to school, she received one of the pigs
and was able to send them to school.
Her daughter was just accepted into
university. For an impoverished family,
something like that is life changing," Mr
He says the thing he loves most about
the program is that it breaks
"It's not a handout; it's helping families
and their children and grandchildren.
We had given a pig to this lady but it's
given a future to her children," he says.
Nowra City Church became involved
after Mr Pilt noticed a flyer at a
conference. "It talked about how a little
thing like buying one pig can make a
I thought, well being a pastor of a
church, I have the ability to do more, to
get others involved."
And get others involved he did.
"Often people think, 'Can I really
make a difference?' What I want to do
as a church is address that. If you give
$100, you can say I bought a pig. It
makes it touchable, it makes it real,
people can say 'I have made a
difference in someone's life'. And if we
say we are going to buy a pig, we will
show you photos of them being
distributed in Vietnam. We are big on
The church is happy to accept
contributions to the Pigs Poverty
Eradication Program and can verify the
money goes to purchasing a pig for a
family in Vietnam.
