SEVERAL Shoalhaven establishments
have featured in the 2012 Sydney
Morning Herald Good Food Guide,
with Berry leading the culinary
Three Berry eateries featured in the
gastronomic bible, led by the Berry
Wood-fired Sourdough Bakery that
scoring 14.5 out of a possible 20, just
half a mark off earning a hat.
It was closely followed by The
Hungry Duck and the Pavilion
Restaurant on 14 points and
Bellachara and Bannisters on 13.5.
The score out of 20 is an assessment
of the total restaurant experience.,
with a possible 10 points for food, five
for service, three for ambience, with
an extra two points possible for
something special, be it location,
service, attitude, commitment or wow
Places scoring less than 12 out of 20
were not included.
"It was a good year for the South
Coast," says owner of Berry Wood-
fired Sourdough Bakery Jelle
"I think everyone works very hard in
all of the restaurants, and it was nice to
have some peer recognition for all the
hard work everyone has done."
There are ongoing efforts to ensure
the region's dining future remains
Nowra TAFE has achieved
outstanding successes training chefs
of the future.
In fact the commercial cookery
students have impressed judges in a
Masterchef style mystery box
challenge as a part of the Johnsons
Club Chef NSW TAFE Challenge
held at Ultimo TAFE.
The team of four students whipped,
pounded, baked and processed up
a storm, as they produced an entree,
main and dessert in three hours,
securing a bronze medal.
Unlike Masterchef, these young
apprentices are training to be
professional chefs working in
commercial cooking, and there was
not a tear in sight.
"It was more fun, less tense," says
team member and second-year
apprentice chef Emma Nielsen,
while working beside Cassandra
Rollo, George Murray and Stephen
