Shoalhaven Unlimited - 2011
recreated his record
breaking jump off the
Las Vegas Arc de
Triomphe, by jumping
from the ceiling of the
Acer Arena. He now
has his eyes set on a
new world record this
coming New Years Eve.
"I was there mingling with the Red Bull
people when I met Josh and his dad, John,
who introduced me to Amy."
When they returned home, the friendship
between the two families continued.
"Josh and I had to do an interview together
in Sydney and I didn't have a licence so
Josh drove and we got to know each other
really well," says Robbie.
Josh won a series of championship titles in
2005, including the Asian X-Games, the
Australia National Championships, and was
first in the King of Wake World Cup and the
Pro Wakeboard Tour, while Robbie put
everything he had on the line at the Crusty
Demons night of world records at Ipswich
raceway in Queensland.
"I didn't know at the start of the night if it
was going to work out or if I was going to
end up pushing daisies," Maddison laughs.
"I had taken out a personal loan against my
house, I was in a lot of debt before that
jump, but when I landed it my house was
paid off instantly and I knew I was a profes-
sional and on my way.
"Since then there have been so many dif-
ferent steps along the way that have taken
me to different levels, I started out at the
very bottom and I have been climbing this
sketchy ladder ever since."
Both have reached 30 and are fathers of
young families. Josh and his wife Katy have
two sons, Jet and Cash, while Robbie and
Amy have just celebrated young Kruz's first
birthday. Both now look differently at their
own future and the future of their chosen
"Having kids is so powerful that your per-
spective changes," Sanders says.
"We need to challenge ourselves or do
something new, if it's the same stuff we
have been doing it's not worth being away
from my family."
Sanders wants to see wakeboarding go
bigger and higher. After breaking a world
record for wakeboarding on sand in front
of the pyramids in Egypt, he has been
working on an idea that could revolu-
tionise the sport.
"Robbie and I have had an idea for ages to
invent a down-ramp system for wake-
boarding, it's something Red Bull is inter-
ested in doing and that is my main project
at the moment."
For Maddison, the immediate future
includes another NewYear's Eve world
record attempt, possibly his most danger-
ous so far.
"I'm planning to beak my own world
record on New Year's Eve in San Diego,
and jump a motorcycle further than any-
one has been. My previous record is 378
feet and that's 22 feet short of this year's
