BILLIONS of dollars are being spent to
upgrade facilities and services at
Nowra naval base HMAS Albatross,
promising to have a major impact on
the local economy for years to come.
All of the base's helicopter fleets are
being replaced in coming years, with
the Sea Kings, Seahawks and Squirrels
to be retired in favour of new model
Seahawks, the MRH-90 utility, and a
new training aircraft yet to be decided.
Major infrastructure works are also
planned to cater for the new aircraft,
including creating a new Helicopter
Aircrew Training School at HMAS
Albatross, to train aircrew for the navy
Shoalhaven Mayor Paul Green says it
is "a very exciting time for our area".
"Examples of this are the $192
million HMAS Albatross upgrade and
$3 billion AIR 9000 Phase 8 helicopter
projects," Cr Green says.
"Both of these projects will create a
large number of full-time jobs while
also providing a huge shot in the arm
for the local economy."
While the navy is spending billions of
dollars to upgrade and update its
capabilities, private enterprise is also
coming to the party.
